The story of Blue streak

Blue Streak Wines & Spirits is the best wine store in Long Island City (at least, we think so). The idea for the wine store came on a trip to Spain, in a small, unnamed winery with delicious house wine. From there picking Long Island City was the most logical choice and the rest is history. The fun for us is when our customers come to the store and ask us for a recommendation. From there we go around the world and back to make sure each person gets the perfect wine.

We are a pretty interesting bunch: A former tax lawyer, a former publicist, a recently graduated college student, and a studying drama therapist... the perfect bunch to ask about wine. Do not let the former titles fool you; we have years of experience in food and wine and are 100% dedicated to finding great wines and making the perfect recommendation for you.

Stephen Spiller

It makes total sense, what else could all my experience be leading up to? Two years an accountant, eighteen years a lawyer, five years an editor/publisher, five years a pet food company executive, and all the while a fanatical photographer. How does all that stuff lead to creating Blue Streak Wines & Spirits? Well … drum roll please … the whole time I was drinking! True, not constantly. And okay, I wasn’t studying the liquor. Let’s call my experience “hands-on” or just practical! In 2007 the "piece de resistance” finally arrived, an amazing environment where you can hear great music, taste and buy fabulous products, and even just stop in and “chill” with our terrific staff.

I am a serious wine geek. I started in the wine business by working in public relations for several of the largest wine producing countries. That was when the wine bug bit, and it bit hard. I decided to pursue the academic path to wine and completed the Viticulture and Vinification certificate at the American Sommelier Association and the Wine & Spirits Education Trust Advanced Certificate. I love to talk about wine, to help people find bottles they will love, and to introduce new discoveries into Blue Streak Wines & Spirits.

James' entry into the wine world was strictly by chance. Like most college students, back home for the summer, he wanted to find a job for the summer. Luckily he was hired for a stock position at Blue Streak Wines & Spirits during the summer of 2009. As James continued working in the wine industry, he discovered his passion for wines and spirits and never looked back. James has completed the Wine & Spirits Education Trust Intermediate Certificate. Proud Alumni of Stony Brook University, Major: Sociology

I am not what one would call a wine geek or wine snob, but I like drinking it! I graduated from Emerson College in Boston with a writing and publishing degree and currently intern at The Public Theater. Two weeks after moving to the city, I was hired by the lovely team at Blue Streak Wine, and I hope to build my liquor and wine knowledge here with them!
